I think it would be more interesting to let the player determine what colour scheme they want for the UI. Fallout 3 (and I think quite a few game) did that.
I prefer white or black because it helps me distinguish colours in buy catalogue more accurately, but I suppose black does not give the right feel for a lighthearted game like this.
