@Cinebar maybe you're onto something. White seems to be the new black as well, with everything coming in white, possibly copying the ipad/iphone trends. But who exactly likes staring at bright white? I know I'm very photosensitive but doesn't it bother everyone at a certain point? maybe I am just not able to grasp it since I've always been this way but even the thought of staring at that loading screen makes me cringe.
Black-on-white also mimics the feel of print. Problem is, print is subtractive, taking a white piece of paper and putting inks on to darken it to the desired color. Screens are additive, combining lights to produce the desired color. Your eyes don't get fatigued reading print because the paper isn't luminescent.
Imagine how much energy could be saved by switching to white-on-black interfaces.
Like the traditional monochrome monitors, which were white, green or amber on black? The problem of black 'light' on top of white is why I cannot use a Kindle or other ebook readers; I cannot read them for long without eyestrain and/or headaches. I would love to compress my library, especially on trips, but there's no point if I can't actually read the ebooks once I have them.
I quite Gamespot when the site changed from white on black to black on white because I couldn't read it anymore. I think they've added a black screen alternative, but I've never really gone back. My primary bbs I go to is set to a dark blue background with white text which works quite well. Unfortunately sits always seem to use the BRIGHT white instead of a dimmer white, which would be easier on the eyes.
