I have always had this on and off, and even with a club leader. It tends to happen to me after the sim in question has been interrupted by a call to go to work (which I say no to) or a party invitation or something. After cancelling out the go to work or whatever it is, she is no longer in the gathering and cannot rejoin. It's ok again at the next gathering, so it's just a case of trying to end the gathering and call a new one.
