Just make friends with the other scientists and you can get crystals and metals from them by just asking lol. And of course in your free time run around and collect them. I usually do a round of collecting when I've completed the day to my satisfaction.
Oh and of course clone the crystals and metals... I usually get the cheapest of each kind (common, uncommon, rare) and make a stack of them.
