Can't follow sim to work help please

I had a similar problem; I couldn't follow my detective to work. I tried resetting him through cheats, but it didn't work. So then, I just had him quit, and I was going to use cheats to put him back at the rank he was. But when I quit and rejoined the career, he was the same rank, and I could follow him to work again.
