Grab yourself a dog, and invite Cassandra Goth over for the weekend. When the weekend is over see for yourself the uncanny comparison between the 2 NPC's (Cassandra and dog). Sure, they'll do different things such as the dog will play ball with you and Cassandra will play video games. I don't think Cassandra plays ball, and I doubt the dog will play a video game. But the basics of it all is pretty much the same. They are NPC's whom you interact with, and will do things with you.... each having their own animations. Cassandra however has much more options.
For a lot of people, maybe that does mean that they'll grow tired of the pets very quickly. But for me, for example, I don't have the pets to be able to do lots of new, unique stuff with them. In the Sims 3 I never felt the need to control them to access that part of the gameplay. For me, they simply add to the realism of the game. I like them because pets, and caring for pets, is a part of life for me. I guess there will be plenty of people like me who think the same about it. Though I found your comparison very entertaining to read, I don't feel like it really applies to me. Sure, I could socialize with another sim and have more options to interact, but at the end of the day I still like the fact that the pet is in the household and wants its attention too. xD Nonetheless, for the people who did enjoy to take control of their pets, it's a shame they can't do so anymore. Even though personally I will not miss the option one bit, I understand that it would've been nice for them to at least have the choice.
