Changing career branch
My sim is in the journalist branch right now, but I'd like her to be an author instead (I prefer the unlockables). Is there still a way to switch? Cause when I quit her job and look for a new one, it ...

in the writer's branch you can choose between "Author" and "Journalist" branch when you've gotten about 5 career levels in. (I don't know if you mean the author branch by the novelist career?)
You can also just write books and sell them to a publisher (using your mailbox) and live off the daily royalties! If you write a book a day it makes quite a good living ^^
