No, demoting and promoting doesn't work - one of the things I tried. They ended up getting fired after so many demotions.

Oh, well, that's ok. Hope at some point you'll be able to. It'd be nice if they can change branches. Maybe they'll fix that in the next patch. Doubt it though.
