Chickens and Foxes

I like the Wild Fox challenge, but for some chicken farmers I removed it because I get too focused on looking for the fox. I need to focus a bit on other sides of life, too :)

I get it that the challenge makes the fox enter the lot occasionally, and if not being chased it will steal an egg, bird or produce. With the challenge turned off the fox should not enter the lot, or will it still come but just very rarely?
And - with the fox challenge off, will the fox take chickens that wander off the lot, or will they be pretty safe, too?

I think the chance of a bird be taken very rarely sounds good, then I won't stress about it so much. So allowing the chickens wander off the lot (no locked gates) might be a good mid way... Never had a bird taken off the lot, but they never walked very far, and I call them to their coop and lock their gate during the night.

What's your experience?

I haven't seen any foxes on the lots without the challenge. I've seen them near the lot though so I'm not sure if chickens will be safe if they wander off. I keep mine fenced in.
  • I have fox challenge on and only had a problem, like, once? Keep them fenced in, and lock the fence door. Forgot to lock the door that one time.
  • I've seen foxes run outside the fence of my Sims' property, but without the Wild Fox challenge Trait, so far, so good. I once had an Excellent Hatchable egg snatched. Gr. Took the chickens ages to produce a hatchable, just to have the dern fox steal it. No, thank you. Reminds me too much of when my grandmother's dog ate our Bandy Rooster!
  • I have fences around the perimeter of all residential lots then lock the main gate to keep any wandering foxes from entering. I don't use the fox challenge but have had the occasional fox wander onto residential properties which is why I use fences. I let the chickens roam all over the home lots, and it's so cute when they come over to 'talk' to my Sims as they garden or take care of the llamas. It's a lot easier to maintain a high relationship with the chickens if they're allowed to wander because they tend to follow my Sims everywhere.

I saw my hen fight and defeat a fox just outside the coop despite the alarm ringing.

Then I swear I saw the same fox return and run off from my garden with a tomato in its mouth.

Foxes steal crops, not just hens. For a period my farmer had to harvest before 6 AM or there would be nothing to harvest. Can't say for sure that the foxes took it all, but I observed them even taking cherries from a tree.

I wonder if we can create a Bandy Rooster in the game. That would be cool to have, a Bandy Rooster roaming around the chickenyard.
  • My golden hen was wandering a lot, making every plant in the world perfect. She came home one day with the mood: "Unhappy! Scared by the fox!" I don't have the foxes challenge on my lot, and it's entirely fenced in, so she'd encountered a fox elsewhere, poor thing. After that, I locked the fence gate to keep her on the lot.
