I was wondering too. It's been a while since any of my sims reached the top of their career (been playing new saves recently), so I don't remember what they get. I do know that the items unlocked in build/buy will stay unlocked within the household. I've had sims who earned them move out, and I could still place those items in the house they were earned.
Depending on their usefulness, I'll place and use the objects (like items with useful emotional auras or if they are just decorative), keep them in family inventory, or delete them.
