Apple decided it would happen now as they got the metal ready early and they want it changed now. It was Apples doing - not EA's because Apple wants to outdo Intell systems for one and two they want to be rid of open gl. I got this info right from the Apple/Mac site by the way.
I'll agree that Apple want to build better, faster, more efficient machines. That they're aiming to build machines that are more desirable for users than PCs.
But a) it's got nothing to do with Intel - Macs use Intel hardware and have done so for a long time and b) that's not a statement they'd put on their official site anyway as it would be highly unprofessional.
Not to mention that Metal was implemented in Macs for years, the point of this was to drop OpenGL since it's outdated and not as efficient as Metal. It's also not "early", my 2015 Macbook Air supports Metal, it's just that they've decided to drop the remnants of 32bit tech in this new OS. Apple has been going that direction for years.
I do agree though that this is not on EA: they're simply accommodating the evolution of Macs by going fully 64bit with TS4 (and TS3).
The only "problematic" thing that they didn't do with this pre-patch announcement is that they aren't handholding users on systems long deemed outdated (since we're talking systems that are 10+ years old).
