Honestly, I just played Sims 2 ( which also lacks control over animals ) and I must say: I don't miss it.
Animals will autonomously feed themselves, cats wash themselves, they'll also pee where they want. Which to me, is much more realistic for animals.
Animals are uncontrolled projectiles a lot of the times, and I think by removing the control, that's the best way to simulate that.
