My theory about the kits recently is that at least some of them were probably ideas that might have been "on the cutting room floor". It's possible for example that these two kitchen styles were considered for the pack and one won and the other wound up in the kit.
As mentioned, they are similar though I agree that the CK one is more French mixed with a bit of American farm style. This is making me realize that the counters can be more customized to a space with the different types of cabinets underneath the counters, sink and corners. I knew how to do that with the cabinets above but had not tried below the counters, so I should.
It's a good question but I am also of the opinion that similar isn't the same. If you like a general theme, it's ok to have more options within it rather than to say, "That's been done, that's it." The player can make the decision. I am not all about kitchen play but I've used the CK kitchen a lot recently and all of my houses have kitchens. As mentioned, it looks like there will be more ways to mix and match especially the clutter if someone wants.
Whenever getting a pack or content, I made the decision that by getting it, I wanted that specific content. I had been wanting a French Country theme so I was interested in CK.
One other way to think of it is that if you get the CoL pack, you might not want to build the same kitchen over and over, so you might use the CK one. Probably the one thing you could criticize is that when the kits came out, we didn't know we would get CoL. If you like the theme though, you like the theme. The idea that a concept can't be further developed would be limiting but I think each player needs to make an individual decision. I like the CK kitchen enough that I am not complaining.
Another way to look at it is that someone who doesn't want the whole CoL expansion might just get the CK kit now that both will be out or they might eventually have sales with the kits and the EP. Honestly, we probably needed more variety in the kitchen sets for those interested in having different kitchens. There were some complaints on here before.
