Real Life: We used to paint over the hinges all the time, never thought of taking them off to paint the doors. It makes them stiff after awhile.
This! I own a late Victorian home with most of the original woodwork intact, including some of the doors. Every hinge had been painted over, and doorknobs too -- with fresh layers if they changed the paint colour at some point. The only exposed wood, too, was indoor flooring. I think there are local rich-people's homes (mine was a lived in by local workers) that might have had more exposed wood and metal, but for the average person, the quality of those things wasn't as high and the paint was protective. For the record, I left it that way, and replacement wood, like the porch, gets a paint job too. The paint over the brickwork outside, however we did get rid of -- it was probably full of lead and was flaking (bad combination!), but it did preserve the brick through years of pollution from local factories!
My other take: There's never too many kitchen things. Every Sim house deserves just the right stuff :)
