I built a perfect plant lot for just this occasion! It has everything you need on it besides food, (I did put a cooler on it, but that doesn't get the hunger bar up very far. I placed the park in Newcrest near grills and a play area so my Sims go there to eat.), so your Sims can stay while the plants grow. The only thing I don't have is a cow plant. I did have one, but I stayed fishing too long not paying attention and it died.
