Cow Plants - Are they worth it?

I usually feed family sims to the cowplant in turns to get the essence, and if it needs feeding and everybody has a moodlet I use the feed option. However, I usually only get 1-3 essence from it before I forget to check it and it dies. One household has 6 cowplant skellies lining the entranceway.
The moodlet isn't that bad and can be negated with a couple of things that give happy moodlets.
