I used to be so excited about them during the launch of the game and I used to play with them a lot, but now I've got bored. They die too easily, you must always look out and feed them because, otherwise, they depart. And as another Simmer mentioned here, none of the random Sims that happen to walk by the house tend to grab the cake like they did in TS3. So, it's been many months since I last played with one of them.
My answer is that they are worth it but only for a little while.
