If I am informed correctly you a degree gives you the opportunity to start so high in a career that you start after it splits into branches. And according to
the list on Carl's site each career has different degrees tied to different branches. So you should be able to pick the corresponding career branch directly after graduation. I haven't been able to test this myself unfortunately but I think this might actually be a work around to get access to the other career branch
On a side note, with mccc you can also reset career branches, a very useful feature of this mod.
