TS3 did some things very well, including offering what felt like fresh new things to do and ways to play, as well as variety in the opportunities.
The packs that succeeded for me were the ones that felt like they expanded the sims’ world — not just stuff that they could do for fun but ways to live their whole lives. So I really loved packs like World Adventures, Ambitions, Into the Future, and Generations because they added a lot to the experience of sims’ lives.
Island Paradise for me did not work as well as those packs because it mainly added leisure activities. Houseboats were buggy and not that interesting. The world itself did not appeal to me and was laggy with serious routing issues caused by problems with NPCs and their boats, badly placed spiral staircases and so on. I much preferred Sunlit Tides (a beautiful and well designed world that I played in a lot), but even that was not as immersive as it could have been.
Sims 3 skimped on a lot of lifelike details, particularly the socials and types of interactions available between sims. Even
Generations did not fix that, although it did advance and rectify it somewhat.
Scroll ahead to TS4, and I feel that in many ways the game has a lot of depth and detail lacking in the previous iterations. The socials are still inferior to those of TS2 and the animations lack some of the variety present in that game. However, the animals feel much more real and like themselves, cats really seem like cats and dolphins like dolphins. The weather and gardening systems also feel more fully developed and better integrated together than ever before. In terms of world and play expansion, TS4 allows sims to interact in new, interesting and varied ways with clubs, and unique skills like herbalism, yoga, and archeology (among others).
As for Island Living, I prefer it to IP because it is richer and fuller. The wildlife is extremely well realized and the game feels more organic and lifelike than before. I’ve been playing an off the grid family in Sulani and it’s has been so much fun. Both fishing and swimming have been greatly improved and are now really fun to do. Sailing around you can see the fish in the ocean and the even the part of the pack that might have been gimmicky, the dolphins, feels natural.
My fisher sim was first approached by a curious dolphin, and, appropriately, it took a long time to build trust with it. One time when the encounter was going well, a huge shark swam by and scared my dolphin away. It made scared sounds and immediately left. Even my sim was scared (she got a new tense moodlet) and autonomously swam for shore. It all felt really real. Amazing new opportunities for family play too. I really like the pack and I know I will get a lot out if it.
