Dine Out Still Buggy?

Dine Out is one of the two game packs currently on sale for 50% off, and the premise of it (my Sims owning their own restaurant) interests me. I don't want to buy it, however, if the gameplay is going to be frustrating due to bugs.

Is Dine Out any better nowadays from the perspective of owning a restaurant? I know already that played Sims cannot be hired as staff (though I think there's a mod for that).

There are threads here, here, and here about the issues Dine Out has, but I'm hopeful at least some of the issues got resolved at some point in the game pack's lifetime.

I use DO a lot so my Sims can dine out, but I occasionally run a restaurant as well because I want them to have a 5* restaurant to dine at. From this experience I would say that I would not recommend running a restaurant with more than 10 tables and allow for space between the tables, I'd say at least enough for two Sims to pass through. Also, if it is a restaurant you are planning to run, keep the kitchen and dining area on the same level. Train your staff up as quickly as possible and regularly check their satisfaction level. Raise the salaries as needed. There is a bug with a table not receiving their order once in a while and then leaving after a few hours and giving you a bad rating. It is frustrating when it happens but it does not happen so frequently that your restaurant can't be successful. I usually get my restaurants to 5* level within 2 in game weeks.
  • I've never tried running the restaurant, but I love sending my sims out to eat. It works fine. Current problem is that the sim they're dining with wont eat their meal, they just drink. I should really try owning a restaurant one day, love the tips by @Netzspannung :)

@musteni Glad you thought it was useful. :)
I did forget to add that the only reason I even run the restaurants for a while is so that my Sims can have excellent quality meals when dining out - not for profit. So I never go above the 125% mark-up, which also contributes to the rating. So for me success is not wealth but a well-functioning, highly rated restaurant with fully trained staff.
But I do have fun while managing the restaurant. I used to work as a waitress many years ago and I can honestly say that the game emulates the hustle and bustle of a busy eatery quite well.

How long will it be on sale? Because if it's well past next Tuesday, you might want to wait to see if it gets fixed in the patch and whether the patch has actually fixed it for real this time, and whether it hasn't introduced new bugs.

One of the things that can help alleviate the time it takes to get food is to have more than one Chef's Station in the kitchen. There is a remodeled Chez Llama in the Gallery, for instance and it has three stations. I remodeled the two eateries I built.
  • For me the best thing about dine out is running restaurant. Yes it is very buggy. Customers won’t sit down. They sit down and then quickly stand up. They leave without ordering. Food disappearing. It is a mess.

I've never tried running a restaurant, but for ages when visiting one my Sims will just stop eating/drinking while socialising. It's not much of a problem for played Sims but if you're visiting with Sims outside your household it's frustrating that they never finish their meal.
  • Yes, it is buggy but it's one of my favorite Sim things to do. I haven't had a restaurant in a long time, like actually run it, but I really like having my Sims go to it.

  • I find it annoying. Sims get up and down 800 thousand times. It takes forever to get food, and if the Sims are talking they most times don't eat. Parenthood is better.
