I tend to cheat cas.fulleditmode on townies and then roll dice (well, an integer website) between an ethnic group listing I grabbed from wiki. That's 222 different ethnic groups for the die to choose from. Then I google names from that ethnic group, 'n edit their looks to match, and clothes to something more suitable. 's sort of like a mini-challenge for myself, I have a lot of fun with it.
The game-created diversity tends to use just Indian and Japanese names, and do it nilly-willy with the genetics/looks/styles of the townies, so I reroll all of those, too.
OMG, I thought I was being OCD, because I edit all my townies and look up name origins, but I am nowhere near as detailed about it as this. 222 different ones!
I mostly stick to Hispanic, Asian, Middle Eastern and Indian, I don't really get specific about the country of origin for the most part, but just try for common names from these general categories. Sometimes I imagine my townie is a 3rd or 4th generation immigrant so give them a totally "americanized" first name with a last name that is obviously not a Caucasian surname.
Even before "city living" I would download families from different ethnicities and cultures, I prefer diversity and pity anyone who is afraid of it.
