Do large trays cause lag?

I have a lot saved to my library. I really don't want to clear my tray if I don't have to. Do large trays cause lag? Just how big do they have to be?

  • Who knows. XD You can try moving the items out of the tray and starting your game and see if there is lag. Then you can move them back if it makes no difference.
  • I don't think it does, because I've just recently cleared out everything that would be in my library (this involves the tray file) and I don't see any difference in lag or loading. I will say though that I had to adjust my game setting to cut down on the lag.
  • What does a tray file do? Sorry for asking but I don't think I've heard of it yet? I'm only wondering as I've got a few Legacy saves that are up there a ways and do get some lag that other saves do not. I'm wondering what they are and if they might smooth out my game a touch by moving them as you say you do?

Oddly though, I get a little more lag (neither is unplayable) on the 8th gen save than the 9th gen save.

The tray file is everything you save in your library, lots, rooms, sims.

    What Lablue said.

Tho, the lag could be due to the save itself. Older saves tend to be more laggy and maybe you have played the 8th Gen more than the 9th Gen? Not sure.
  • Something you can do that seems to help is do a "Save As" from time to time. That will help with lag also because it is making a fresh game save.
  • There have definitely been times in the past where user tests by Simmers have found that large Tray folders and stuffed Saves folders cause lag. You can drag your Tray folder elsewhere, as well as saves you aren't playing, and put them back when you need to access those things. You don't need the Tray folder during gameplay; anything you saved there or got from there will stay in your save if you move the Tray files out. The Tray is *only* the Library, which is outside your save.

Sometimes deleting the file localthumbcache seems to help, especially if it's been a really, really long time since you did that.

Some lag (mostly during lot loading) is caused by having lots of Sims in the world with lots of relationships -- it's a risk from turning relationship culling off via a mod. Lots full of interactable objects can also cause lag.
