Do Sims recognize what counts as a Kitchen/Bathroom/Bedroom for renovations?

I finally caved and bought Dream Home Decorator (so far I think it su.cks, worse than Journey to Batuu, at least that worked) but one thing I've noticed is that I routinely get no pay and a reputation...

I read a post recently that stated the game doesn't recognised room types. I don't personally know if that's true, but the mechanisms in the DHD pack does seem to imply that's the case.
