I keep urns/tombstones in my inventory because of this. If one is on the lot, all living sims do is mourn, and the ghosts act entirely on their moodlets instead of having any remainder of personality. They possess objects, which is funny a couple times, but not as often as it happens.
I worked hard to build up a relationship with my legacy founder's deceased husband so she could re-marry him. It was bad enough that death parted them, and when he re-married her, he wasn't anything like... himself. So we returned him to the netherworld, disappointed. :'(
