The concept is very nice. You all have your Sims wearing romantic pinks and reds at the Romance festival, or bohemian/artistic outfits at the Spice festival, etc.
But... I think they've just left too much to the randomiser with not enough parameters to come up with a non-ridiculous outfit. So, it picks, say, a pink item from every single type of clothing/accessory there is. At least to me that's how it appears to work -and there's a certain favouritism for items from newer packs it seems.
What they should have done instead, I don't know if this is possible, is create a number of styled looks (I don't care if those are hidden) specific for each situation and randomise among those. That way Sims don't look ridiculous, but have event specific clothing. It would be possible for there to be two Sims wearing the same outfit, but if multiple colour options were allowed, that might solve that little problem.
I like your idea of randomised styled looks. But they'd have to make A LOT of them, otherwise everybody would be walking around in the same outfit.
I like the cosplayers at GeekCon. The rest aren't that great. They also don't really bother me, partly because I'm not a rotational player so they are never my own played sims, and because I'm kind of used to townies looking weird.
I'm into the idea of situational outfits, to change up the world around our sims and make the situations/locations/festivals more cohesive and immersive, but like said above, I see how it's annoying when they don't fit the sims' style/personality/traits. Or when they are just generally mismatched.
