In Sims 3, there were certain circumstances where your Sim wouldn't change into their everyday clothing when out and about. People would laugh at them, the Sim would get embarrassed. See, I wouldn't mind it so much in Sims 4 if going to the school in your underwear/PJs had an actual affect on the sim and their mood and the reactions to people around them. As it is, it doesn't matter what they're wearing, no one cares.
My first game, one of my sims had his clothing stolen while skinny dipping. I didn't realize that all you had to do was click on a dresser to change back instead of finding the stolen clothing so he was stuck wearing a towel everywhere for a couple of days until I finally figured it out. He had a rough time of it and it was hilarious. Poor guy, it affected everything around him including his work performance.
Yes, it’s trait based, some sims will always show up in ‘wrong’ clothing and other sims do react to that. What’s the fun if they don’t.
