I couldn't have lived without AwesomeMod in S2 and S3 (and later, NRAAS after Pescado finally gave up on S3 - not everyone loved S3). S3 was simply unplayable without a controller because of the open world and story progression crashing the game when Sims (or cars) got stuck or the world got overpopulated.
My job takes up too much of my time these days - I don't have much time to play, let alone check that mods and cc are compatible with the latest patch or pack, so I play vanilla. However, it's also true that S4 simply doesn't crash.
I also used controller mods in the past to get around problems with moving Sims in and out of families and the requirement that you make friends in order to advance in your career. With S4, you can easily edit families and only the politician career requires friends. There are a few things I miss - I liked the 'no social worker' option with AwesomeMod that allowed kids to live alone, and I liked the option not to send my kids and teens to school. I'm still hoping the developers will add home-schooling, either in a patch or an education pack, however.
