I've never used mods before in my sims games.
It's not to say that I won't ever try -- I might. But I didn't need them with 1, 2, and 3 and they all ran fine for me and the gameplay wasn't lacking I thought. (I don't know if they had mods for 1?).
I'm fine playing 4 vanilla. I suppose it's because I don't know what I'm missing, maybe? But, yeah. It's OK without them for me.
Edit: I did use pose player once for a specific thing in Sims 3. I forgot about that. But other than that I haven't used mods or cc.
