… in the lower corner, screen left while your game is playing? I have one suddenly and it has numbers that fluctuate and the letters FPS beside it. What the heck is this?

It's the games built in FPS counter but that usually has to be turned on with a cheat console command to be visible did you turn it on by accident?
You can try to turn it off by CTL+SHIFT+C to open the cheat window and type fps off then hit enter and then CTL+SHIFT+C again to close the window.
