@idkemily, In Sims 4, you need the death flower to be on a live sim, not the one who died, to bring them back. The live sim has to offer the flower to the Grim Reaper before he reaps the soul of the one who died. So, if you want a safety net, you need to make sure to have death flowers in the inventory of all your active sims.
If you have a sim die and s/he's the only active sim in your game...the death flower will do no good.
oh ok thank you!!! you probably just saved me from another unprovoked death :)
also would like to point out that when my other sim pleaded with the grim repear he agreed to bring him back and then he was alive for ONE MINUTE SIMS TIME WHICH IS LITERALLY ONE SECOND and then COLLAPSED AND DIED AGAIN FROM HYSTERIA. like are you kidding me.
