I eventually figured out that when you're in that state you can click on the Sim, select "Surge Emotion" and get a +4 to whatever emotion you want (Focused, Confident, etc. - though they have different names when selecting them in this mode).
Oh thank you! I've been playing Sims for years & had no idea what this buff did. I'll be making use of it in future. :)
