Off-topic but whatever, XD. I honestly hate the way that questline starts, like Brynjolf literally assumes the newcomer to town is naturally a thief. Like does he do that with every new face and traveller that comes through Riften? It's a bit annoying. I wish him approaching the Dragonborn was more tied with the player's skills at stealth, lockpicking and pickpocketing or even knowing how many times they've lifted something form someone/somewhere. Rather than him just assuming they're a thief or want to be one.
It is also annoying that you can still join the Thieves Guild even if you fail the reverse pickpocketing mission, like that should be an indicator that the Dragonborn isn't a thief or a wants to be one Brynjolf ffs.
When you don't have a lot of gold, instead of implying you're a thief, he says that he can tell you don't have a lot of money and can earn some by thieving. And if you fail the quest, he chalks it up to the guild's recent string of bad luck. Taking you in isn't too much of an issue; if you fail, you're on your own. If not, you're an asset. But yeah, I agree that looking your stats makes more sense - the Mages Guild makes you learn certain spells or use your shouts, and the Dark Brotherhood requires you to take one of their contracts from under their noses and kill Grelod. For a thief, Brynjolf isn't even stealthy about recruitment.
I purposely fail the quest because Brand-Shei deserves better than prison. My boy make be a knife-ear, but he's an Argonian at heart. Plus I don't want to be mean to the NPCs.
