I wouldn't recommend avoiding traits before trying them out first, as you might be surprised what you enjoy. Every player is different after all and I think it's more fun to have sims with different personalities.
Exactly! I actually cling to these little "flaws" in a sim's character because personality is scarce in TS4.
Romancing the unflirty Darling Walsh or spawning with the children-hating Lili Feng are not really obstacles, but minor challenges that bring a little variety to my game play. And, while the mean trait can deteriorate a relationship, evil is certainly no dealbreaker. I even paired up good and evil partners, and all of them are loving spouses and caring parents. As are the neat Eliza and the slobby Bob Pancakes.
Erratic? No problem. My sim's relationship with the totally crazy but still adorable June Kay is a fiery joyride.
The only trait I really despise is kleptomanic, it did cost me a few worthy paintings in the past. But once these sims are in your own household they are other people's problem.
So, no, no trait is too bad when it comes to my sim spouses, unless it doesn't fit a particular story.
