Editing space outside rental

I'm trying to change the wall height of a fence that borders my sims rental and their neighbour but it won't let me because its not apart of the rental space, even though it's an adjoining wall. How do I make this change?

    Maybe try editing from Manage worlds? Go to the map, then click on the lot (not the unit) and there should be a build button in the corner that will let you edit the shared area
