I hate it when people act like Occults are niche. While not everybody likes occults, they are heavily requested and highly anticipated, and it would be better to have an on-off switch like we now do for Dust, than nerfing them so you hardly ever see them.
Occult simmers are the most quiet when it comes to "demands" (well sci fi fans are even quieter) and we are so patient. So I hate it too when people are like "Who asked for this? no one cares about occults" and mostly when it huge game changers. The occult sim community is also huge in this community and yet people think everything we wish is "niche" when it's not
What I've noticed (and maybe it's just selective memory) is that occult simmers are generally okay with non-occult packs coming out as long as there's occasionally some occult stuff. Because, yeah, maybe werewolves would be great but a high school pack or bands or whatever would also be really useful. They might get snippy about really dedicated packs that appeal only to super-niche interests, like knitting or vacuuming, but I don't know that they do that any moreso than non-occult players.
But any occult stuff or things that are deemed "unrealistic" (in a game where there's an actual Grim Reaper, you can romance a scarecrow, etc.) gets the hardcore mundane players up in arms. Rather than thinking, oh, I don't need to buy this pack since I don't want vampires/wizards/Star Wars, they think "the occult simmers are stealing from me, because this could have been a game pack about school or teen romance or elder care or whatever."
(I'm kidding there. EA clearly has little interest in any mundane gameplay not aimed at YA sims. Knitting is probably as close as we'll ever get to Generations.)
I agree with all your points and they are well made.
I suppose as you imply the distinction between the two groups of players and their attitudes is that Supernal players can often use most items/gameplay features included in a mundane pack, but the converse is less true for mundane players. There are exceptions, of course, say if you want to supernatural play without technology, for instance.
Also, in the past Supernaturals were often placed into just one big pack, rather than being spread out across multiple packs, thus they were easier to avoid and gave less cause for resentment. Also, in past games, the supernatural gameplay had to be activated in some way by the player.
It's a shame that these issues causes so much resentment though.
