I'm with you on this.
In my headcanon, familiars aren't "pets", they're more like otherworldly demons/spirits/entities. So mine would have names more in line with His Dark Materials or the Bartimaeus Trilogy.
Oh man, now I wish there were pine martens as familiars. Lyra and Pan would be really fun! Will and Kirjava would be easy enough, though.
