@GodleyJeans, it certainly is not that simple from the dev side of things. Simply allowing layering of "everything" instead of what we have now would just lead to a ton of content looking silly/overlapping each other in weird ways.
Right now, the way the meshes for t-shirts and sweaters are designed, for example, if they just enabled shirts to layer with each other, you'd have overlap goofily and look funny...i.e. they wouldn't actually overlay properly.
The only way to fix that, is to go through each individual piece of content itself and redesign them specifically to address that because they were not initially designed to be layered with each other.
It is, of course, totally doable...but it is not nearly as simple as a quick engineering change on the software side for them to do it so things actually looked good.
Oh gosh, I wasn’t saying it was easy by any means! What I mean is, the software IS THERE, it is possible and it isn’t as if the team have to create an entire new feature out of thin air, one that could easily take months or even up to a year to properly design, bug check and release.
I agree with you on the fact they would need to go through all the clothes they’ve ever created to enable a fashionable and realistic pairing of “everything”, however, I’m not foolish enough to assume they wouldn’t put a sims 4 twist on this feature to make it their own, or something new so nobody is annoyed by this possible option,
Coding in all forms is difficult, whether you’re new to it or a professional whose job it is everyday to create long strands of it or even fill whole systems with new pieces and such.
What I’m trying to say is that it’s not impossible and given what we already have, it’s hopefully probable, it’s not something they can give some lame excuse towards as to not doing so. That’s what I mean, however not for a second do I encourage people to scream and deliver ridiculous outcry’s to try and get their attention as they have with other desired features.
And as much as I loath the thought of silly outfit mash ups should this option be made real, I also enjoy it, yes it would mean a possibly game breaking mash up of layers and awful choices clothes wise but people in the real world do that, you have challenges of 20 or more shirts or trousers or underwear, why should sims lack the ability to be as stupid and ridiculous as we are? Also don’t forget those sim tube views.
Bring it on, I say, especially the awful looking outfits and layers because no doubt there’s someone in the world who wants their sim to look utterly insane!
