The gender patch came out in June 2016, not January, so this is not exactly an annual event.
I like free stuff as much as the next person, and if you look back, they've patched in practically an EP's worth of free content over the years. But in my experience playing online games or games with an online update system, a patch is meant to fix bugs and tune the game. I don't get where the expectation comes from that major new content is going to be added for free with every, or in fact any, patch. People seem to build that expectation up and then many express disappointment when it doesn't happen.
We are not owed free content.
Maxis did say that ‘new experiences’ would be added every month. That suggests that *something* will be added. (“Something” not being exclusively new content/features) That’s part of the live service, engagement content/features. They have their own team.- PertheliaSeasoned Novice

That's true, but the assumption that I see pop up over and over that *something* will be of the impact and complexity of toddlers or the gender changes is highly unrealistic. Sometimes it's a couple of light fixtures. Sometimes it's game tuning. - DomainGoat90New Spectator

Speaking of patches, when do they normally come out? Is it on a specific day of the week? Do you think the Jan patch will come this week? I don’t remember waiting longer than a week or so for a patch to come out.
No I don't think we'll see the patch this week because their waiting till 1 week before Laundry Stuff to release it and there has been no trailer or anything.
How can you be sure Laundry stuff is coming out this month? It could be February.
I was right. It's been announced and coming Next Tuesday the 16th. TheSims just announced on Twitter.

So I see, not that I’m bothered about laundry. Why are you so sure the base game is getting a huge update? That I’m curious about.
Cause it's got one for the past 2 years in a row and Grant talked like there will be another one coming this year that is free.
As far as I am aware in his latest interview he only said they were going to continue with adding free stuff, not that the updates were going to be huuuuuuge and that it was going to be this month or next month.
If you can dig up the exact sentence where he said we are going to get a huge free update either this month or the next, please come forward. - icemanfreshSeasoned Newcomer

The toddlers playing with the wash basin is a nice touch. :) Now if only pets could interact with the laundry stuff too, like dogs playing with the basin, but I doubt it.
Or your dog pulling down your laundry from the line.
Yeah! They're quite the troublemaker. :D"Simpatsyann;c-16256296" wrote:

Well, we only got an EP's worth of content because the base game was lacking in the first place. I'd say most of the stuff included should've been there from the start. Kudos to them for at least trying to get the base game to an acceptable state instead of abandoning it, but I'd say that should've been expected of them. So it's not like the updates are a bonus, except maybe for the gender patch. :p "Chazzzy;c-16257211" wrote:
This thread shouldn't even exist yet. It had me thinking the Jan patch was already released and I missed something.

This is true. A lot of that stuff is really basic. Like toddlers. I love how they're implemented but I will never for the life of me understand why they weren't included from the start. - Well the February patch better be good now that the January one turned out to be so weak.
- Hmm. Yeah I get that they're not allowed to talk about it. But I do wonder how many people are part of that team then, and am just overal curious what they're working on, I mean who doesnt love free stuff x'D even if it's weird sand ''snow'' man ghehe.
Would love for that team to give us spiral and L shaped staircases but as they come with animations I more expect those to be part of a pack. - catloverplayerSeasoned AceI'm hoping for some Valentine's Freebies in the February Patch
