Has anyone else had this problem where you get the fertile trait but only have single births, my sim had a set of twins before the trait was added cause I wanted triplets but nothing 8 babys later all...

A lot of people have this problem. I've never played around with the fertile award, due to the fact I usually don't want twins. I've had a couple sets of twins in my game, never triplets.
Try making sure both parents have it, and during the mom's pregnancy have her watch the kids channel.
To influence gender you can have you mom eat strawberries and listen to pop music for female, or eat carrots and listen to alternative for male.
