Free real estate problem

I have a problem with the free real estate cheat, but am not sure if it is a bug or working as intended.

I split several sims from a household, planning to move them into a house via free real estate next. The game gave me the usual warning that I was about to create a household with zero money and would not be able to afford a place to live for them. No big deal, I thought, and entered the cheat. However, the game would not let me move my sims into a house (The cheat was working, b.t.w., I tested that with another household.) I then merged the broke sims with a townie, thus giving them 20,000 simoleons, and now they were eligible to profit from the free real estate cheat.

What's your take on this? Bug or not bug?

I just tried this and had no problem moving in with $0. I used Manage Families to split the household. I used Manage Families again to choose my new household and move in. There were no lots available, of course, so I opened the cheat window and put FreeRealEstate on. Once I did that, all of the residential lots turned green. After moving in, I checked household funds. They still had $0, not a negative balance.

The key seems to be turning on free real estate during the move-in process.
  • I tried that and it's technically working, with some difficulties.

    - The 1 $ household was able to use free real estate to move into a home of their choice, however, the household funds were shown as -11,477 simoleons afterwards (beats me where it gets this precise number, probably the value of the furniture on the lot?).
    - Entering the lot revealed that they really had a negative balance and could't buy anything
    - Using the "money " cheat returned an error only
    - Using "money +11477" brought funds not to 1 again, but to 11477 simoleons. From here on the household should behave normally, but one never knows. Good thing I did both of those movings in the photoshooting save only, not in the gameplay save.
  • I've never had a Sim with zero Simoleons before. I would try it with 1 Simoleon and see what happens. It's odd, but I've also never received a notice my Sim couldn't go forward having no money.

It's a function from University, I think it came with the patch for everyone and is not limited to DU owners. When you split a sim from a household in Household Management and are too lazy to transfer money to the new household (because you plan to free real estate them into their home, for example), then that new family will have no funds at all and you get that warning.

And, yes, 1simoleon works, with the caveats mentioned above.
