Sometimes taking a break from the game could help to get new ideas.
Also, I tend to vary my games, and have multiple save files to keep my interest. Some save files are themed, while others aren't. The themed ones are usually based on a series I like that follow canon families, AUs, and What-ifs, and have all those families living in the same area and interact. Others are Sims I created not based on anything, and placed into different dynamics. Either a single Sim, the typical nuclear family with parents, and kids. As well as families where siblings live together, until I marry them off, or keep them in the family. Also, science babies for me were fun for Sims I wanted to keep single.
Also, my game play can vary, I have the PC version, with a few packs, and my PS4 that has almost everything on it. For my PC version, I have some saves that have a single family, and just plan to basically make them a legacy. Also, with my PC version, I have only about two to four households to switch between, and may combine them later. My PS4 version has tons of families, so I can play with whoever I want to play with at the time. The dynamics are slightly different for each one too. I had to stop the second generation, and plan to combine families, before starting on gen 3, and beyond. Sometimes I move out teens, and focus on them, and reduce the families to make it more interesting as well.
I tend to ignore the premade Sims, and only have my Sims interact with them, unless they get married to the premade Sim. I also go on the Gallery to get Sims to add more variety as well.
