Ghosts and the Sims count

I always thought that while a dead sim was still a ghost, he or she would count towards the sims count. And that releasing the spirit meant the dead sim would be removed from the counting.

But when I released a few spirits, the sim count did not change a all. So, now I wonder if I could just as well have kept all those spirits? I have a few cemetaries, and it would be nice having just a few ghosts hanging around.

Can someone please enlighten me regarding dead sims? At what point do they stop adding to the sims count?

Sims will be removed from the counter as soon as they die. Ghost will only count towards limit when they are asked to move in.
So yes, sims who die will be moved to a hidden household that is hidden in Other Households section. This allows the game to delete the ghosts after about 90 days. Releasing the spirit means you delete them via gravestone. The ghost will never show up again but stays in the family tree (beware, after one update one of my sims' family tree got messed up. The sim released to netherworld is not found).
