The should stay in bed until 6 am as long as you had them go to bed before 12, like in previous games. That way all sims where well rested regardless of their individual need for the night. And if they had a good bed or bad didn't really matter (you just sent the sims with worse beds to bed earlier).
I think though elder woke up whenever in TS3, guess they were supposed to simulate elder with bathroom breaks XD
I think the sims where better at staying in bed in TS4 before as well, but it's not really fun playing a bigger household anymore, when everyone wake up every hour of then night :/
