This isn't about how well the Sims 4 is doing financially. It's more about how well it is doing service to the Sims series as a whole. The roots thing and all. How well it's serving the sims players as a whole, and in that aspect, it is failing.
I agree, Sims 4 was never about bring the player back to it's roots, the only thing it brought back is loading screens and less creativity. Sure I can decorate my houses out of the yin yang but I can't alter the lots, create my own lots, or let alone create my own neighborhoods most of the packs are gimped such as CL and even though it is not about apts, most people were expecting to create apts from scratch as one could in Sims 2 and come to find out not only you can't build apts from scratch, you can't have apts in any other neighborhood and with that what are some people to think with future packs. Now comes MFP which has most of it's items connected with C&D and while it is not illegal it is Imho not an good move and now it may have to expected in future packs. The only conclusion that I come up with Sims 4 may be remembered for being the most controversial version and Sims series is all of a sudden not looking too popular. I really was digging Jungle Adventure and now there may a SP pertaining to it with items that I may have to purchase to add items to it. I just can't say Sims 4 is the best when for me it is not and just adding items and emotions is just not my cup of tea. It is not an technical knockout and for what Sims 2 and Sims 3 was to me more advanced than Sims 4 pertaining to features even if it caused problems for others but EA/Maxis is not known for tweaking what they have and took the easy way out Imho. You can add only so much items and I do not see Sims 4 expanding beyond what it has or can offer it has reached its peak unless EA/Maxis pulls a trick or two out thier hats.
