I actually find sim-making to be really easy so my problem if anything is that I end up with too many sims. I might be better off slimming my rotation down more. Currently I've found the best thing is to just let myself play the households that I want to play. What do I want to do right now? It's ok, go ahead and do that.
About making sims, I love to put them together and give them histories, personalities, quirks, etc. I view going into CAS as casting my sims. I have a style which is not really model-like but more like attractive but unique in a kind of normal way. Everyone has little flaws that also make them more interesting. If anything, I make them trendy but not too trendy. Um ... any slider is fair game, no one is a stranger to the slider tool. I've made diverse sims just as a normal part of populating the world (referring to the combo of all of the worlds). Sometimes I start with a concept and sometimes I make the sim then come up with the jist of their lives and backgrounds.
That is definitely not bragging. I'm still learning roofing but otherwise, I make everything easily. I usually like to start a household with a sense of wondering what is going to happen. For example, I'll make roommates and then see what path they go down. They'll have a background of family history and why they moved there along with a basic personality and tendencies. I usually don't script out everything before playing. Sometimes I'll add a group of them as potential romantic partners for someone and then keep playing with the ones I like. Yeah, slimming my list of households down to focus on ones I really want to play more often is probably where I am at. I'm not unhappy with it and I'll really go with the flow of having fun and seeing households develop; I just probably don't need to follow up on houses that I'm not so interested in. It's ok to just let them age along.
