Has anybody noticed this

I started a new game lately and when I was managing households one of my single sims had gotten married to another family with kids. The kids took the name of my sim as did their mom yet she hadn't adopted them yet. Wondering if this was just a crazy fluke because it's something I never saw before while playing. I just found this interesting and hope it kind of stays or ends being something random.
