Nope, it didn't work. That's not a feature in the Sims 4, and it wasn't in The Sims 3, either. The object turns red to let you know it can't be given to the other sim. If the item disappears from your sim's inventory, it's because you accidentally placed it on a surface (floor, counter, etc.)
We can only drag inventory items to other sims in the same household. In TS3, you'd need a mod like Awesomemod, for example, to do this.
Why don't you try it again in your own game, this time paying close attention to what actually happens to the item.
