You actually had a party event on a holiday? I didn't think the game allowed that. I tried once when my sims birthday was on Winterfest and I couldn't arrange the party cos it wouldn't let me do it.
Are you wanting a goaled party? If that is not a requirement, you could use the GT club system and have a gathering and then your guests would stay until you decided to end it.
