My game would be ruined if a servant stole a rare portrait of a former head of the house - being a monarch or a duke. I really hope they only steal motifs that can be recreated from the catalogue.
I normally make sure my sims who hire servants have the "observant" trait, I think that is what it is called. That trait is not very expensive, but it makes it easier to learn all traits of another sim, say a maid or farmhand. This way my sims can avoid hiring a klepto, or at least get rid of it very quickly.
