This is what I'm doing. It might be because I use MCCC to speed up skill and power gain, but I get my vamps to spam the research and they are Grand masters in no time. Its just a more hassle-free way of gaining power, instead of having to find other sims to use your powers on, like sparring. I just plop them down in front of the computer for a few sim-hours, and they're done.
